Long Live The Angels Follows Sandé’s 2012 Debut, Our Version Of Events, Which Has Sold More Than Four Million Albums Worldwide

Beats 1 Interview With Sandé Airs Tonight

On November 11, Capitol Records will release Long Live The Angels – the follow-up to Emeli Sandé’s 2012 debut album, Our Version Of Events, which has sold more than four million albums worldwide. Exultant in its delivery and bold in its intent, the album is steeped in an unreserved sense of freedom and self-discovery. It’s from that feeling of freedom that the first single “Hurts” was born, an uplifting track brimming with heart and soul.

“This entire album is about me not holding back and not censoring myself, and ‘Hurts’ is an explosion, it’s just…real talk,” explains Sandé.

Released today, “Hurts” can be downloaded HERE and streamed HERE. Sandé produced and co-wrote the song with Mac & Phil (Miguel, Naughty Boy). Long Live The Angels is available for pre-order HERE. See below for track listing. Fans who pre-order the digital album will instantly receive “Hurts.”

“Sandé is back on top form with her second album,” observed the U.K.’s Sunday Times in a recent “Culture” section cover story. She will discuss the making of the new album with Julie Adenuga on Beats 1 at 1:00 PM ET today.

Emeli Sandé

A lot has happened to the Scottish artist in the four years since the resounding success of Our Version Of Events. It was the biggest selling album of 2012 in the U.K., where it was certified 7x Platinum and spent 63 consecutive weeks in the Top 10 of the U.K. album chart – more than any other debut album ever, including The Beatles’ Please Please Me. Our Version Of Events was named as one of the best albums of the year by critics worldwide, including The New York Times’ Jon Caramanica, who hailed it as “unerringly beautiful” and ranked it at No. 1 on his list.

The first single, “Next to Me,” was a smash hit, selling more than seven million downloads worldwide, including 1.5 million in the U.S., where it is certified Platinum. Views for the accompanying video exceeded 66 million. Sandé performed at the White House and at the opening and closing London 2012 Olympic ceremonies. She won numerous awards, including three BRIT awards, two Ivor Novello awards, a BET award and Breakthrough Artist of the Year honors at NARM’s 2013 Music Biz Awards. A highly sought-after writer, she has written songs for Alicia Keys, Rihanna, Katy Perry and many others.

As 2013 came to a close, Sandé was exhausted and unable to ignore the strain the hectic pace was putting on a number of close relationships, “Sounds a bit dramatic but I just wanted to disappear. I just had this overwhelming sensation and realization everything had to stop,” she reflects. “And then slowly it did.”

Recorded in New York, Los Angeles, London and Oxford, Long Live the Angels crackles with energy and a sense of euphoria. Opening track “Selah,” a short poem backed by a choral choir, is a poignant introduction to the album. Next up is the striking “Breathing Underwater,” which Sandé describes as “the ultimate journey in rebirth and self-discovery.” The stripped-back “Give Me Something” is an inspiring take on keeping the faith despite the odds being stacked against you, and the melodic “Shakes” is led by piano and strings.

Garden” harks back to Sandé’s urban roots, written and produced in London with Jay Electronica, who also features on the track. “Sweet Architect,” produced by Johnny Coffer and Mojam, is the show-stopping centerpiece, punctuated by a remarkable choir. Towards the close of Long Live the Angels, we witness a jubilant Sandé experiencing the hopes of new possibilities on “Every Single Little Piece” and “Highs and Lows.”

“I’m proud of my first album and thankful for the experiences it gave me,” says Sandé. “But I’m so much happier with my new album and with where I am in life.”
